Suddenly the house echoes with silence,
The stillness loud with their absence,

There is no morning mandli now,
No gup shup amongst mom and her bough,

No shout down the hall to ask for sugar readings,
No bickering over what dad can eat and certainly no pleading,

Baby’s head does not turn the staircase way,
As it did when she heard her Nani climb the stairway,

No one sits in the empty chair besides her,
The green cushion more prominent now because it is bare,

No one to cut short her morning routine,
No nani to persuade mama to be lean,

Even the vegetable vendor is at a loss,
No auntie for his veggies to endorse,

No more of the yummy rice pudding,
No luchis or the love abounding,

Suddenly the house echoes with silence,
The stillness loud with their absence
